Our Story

Hey, I'm Mark and our business is called Magnolia Oaks Woodshop.

I love woodworking and building fun, unique, and useful products with wood. Always have.

Growing Up on the Farm

I grew up on a farm in South Mississippi and have always loved being outside and making things. My Dad was a professor at our local university and a building designer, drawing house plans for families in our area. In the summers, he managed the construction for 2-3 homes, and as one of two sons, I was always "offered" various jobs to help out on the job sites.

As a result, I spent much of my youth on construction sites around carpenters, plumbers, bricklayers, electricians – you name it. For some reason, building useful things with wood always appealed to me.

Fond Childhood Memories

Some of my fondest childhood memories involve my Dad and I going to the local Honda place, asking if we could have their used pallets so I could build things with the wood.

We'd (well, I'd) load them up in the back of my Dad's 1984 brown Datsun King Cab truck and take them home. Every Christmas, I’d get one big box of nails (and a case of baseballs, since I was really into baseball growing up), which had to last me all year.

Early Woodworking Challenges

My Dad didn’t have the best tools for woodworking. He had an old Delta table saw and drill press, both of which rarely worked. But that never stopped me from building things.

Summers were spent driving my 4-wheeler out to “Mathisville,” my made-up town in the woods, where I built little structures with the pallets: a hotel, restaurant, general store, coffee house… Mathisville had it all!

Life and Reigniting My Passion

Fast forward a few years: I finished college, graduated from grad school, worked in the corporate world, got married, and had three sons. Life was busy and happy, but I hadn’t built anything in years.

Fortunately, we moved into a new house with a separate one-car garage, which I converted into my woodshop. That’s when I started building again, and Magnolia Oaks Woodshop was born.

Magnolia Oaks Woodshop was created to share my woodworking projects with the local community. It has since grown into a business where we ship custom orders all across the U.S.
